Love Your Gut: Enzymes

Our gut is busy!
Our digestive system is a busy place and with all the new research coming out on a daily basis we are fairly up-to-date when it comes to bacteria.
But what about enzymes?
There are different enzymes for different food groups, such as carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, some enzymes are produced in our organs: mouth, stomach, pancreas and the small intestine other come from foods.
Enzyme from foods
Bromelain; contained in raw pineapple (the middle stem) assists with protein digestion, especially with heavy protein foods like meats or beans and is also a very effective anti-inflammatory. Enjoy as fresh fruit before your meal.
Amylase; raw honey, raw fruit, and vegetables contain amylase an enzyme to break down carbohydrates, it helps to break down starchy foods into sugar which is used for energy and the metabolism. Have a raw food salad before your dinner.
Lipase; avocado, nuts, seeds and coconut flesh are rich in lipase, which assists with the breakdown of fats. Roasting nuts and seeds destroys the live enzymes so eat them raw throughout the day for a healthy dose of essential enzymes.
Herbal Enzymes; certain herbs and spices used in cooking also provide enzymes for good digestion. The herbs should be consumed in their raw state, and you can use them to season or garnish salads. Try fennel, dill, peppermint leaves, ginger and catnip for a variety of healthful flavors.
